Do you find yourself frustrated by what's reported in the mainstream media? If so, you are not alone. Recent studies have found that many Americans are skeptical of news organizations.

Because many of us depend on the mainstream media to deliver our news and real estate market updates, we are often at their mercy. How can we be sure that the media is telling us the whole story?

I've devoted this month's Item of Value to examining the role that media plays in our understanding of conditions in the current housing market. You will also find advice for putting the mainstream media's reporting into context. Media reports

can be filled with stories that focus only on the negative by using misleading headlines or burying the positive news.

It's easy for the media to distort today's news for its own gain, and I want to show you how you can avoid this! Read how in this month's item of value

If you have plans to buy or sell, now is the perfect time to start preparing for the busy Spring Market. Call me today for up-to-date information on our ever-changing market! I look forward to helping you with your next transaction.

Spring is just around the corner! With the recent record snowfalls, inspecting your house has never been more important! Here's a great checklist for March. If you are considering a new roof this year, ask your contractor what roofing options are available to help protect your home from winter ice dams.

  • Check for damage to your roof, chimney, gutters & downspouts
  • Check all the fascia and trim for deterioration or ice damage
  • Replace your furnace filter
  • Clean the kitchen exhaust hood and air filter
  • Always have a multi-purpose fire extinguisher accessible in the kitchen
  • Clean clothes dryer exhaust duct, damper, and space under the dryer
  • Make sure the light bulbs in all your fixtures are the correct wattage
  • Consider installing a lightning protection system on your home
  • Protect all your electrical appliances from power surges and lightning
  • Run through a severe-weather drill with your family
  • Repair all cracked, broken or uneven driveways and walks to help provide a level walking surface
  • Check the shutoff valve at each plumbing fixture to make sure they function - don't forget the washing machine
  • Replace all extension cords that have become brittle, worn or damaged
  • Change batteries, inspect and clean dust from the covers of your smoke and carbon monoxide alarm.
